Jatropha oil is a purgative to humans. Seeds are not for human consumption, but are a valued source for biodiesel fuel. As a fuel source, jatropha is four times more productive than soybeans. An acre of jatropha plants can produce up to 1,000 gallons of oil per year for making jatropha biodiesel.
Facts about Jatropha Plants:
- You can grow 2500 Jatropha plants per hectare
- Each plant will reasonably produce 4.5 lbs. of usable seed per year on maturity.
- 1 hectare will produce approx. 11,250 lbs. of seeds per year
- Based on conservative estimate, approximately 30% oil can be recovered.
- 1 hectare will produce about 3,375 lbs. (450 gallons) of jatropha oil.
- 7,500 lbs. of oil cake (a byproduct) can be sold/used as fertilizer.
- 95% conversion rate: 1 hectare of Jatropha plantation will produce about 427.50 gallons biodiesel
Free Fatty Acids (FFA) Test Strips - a quick and easy way to find the free fatty acids level in your wvo and other oils.
Also called Fryer Oil Test Strips and Shortening Monitor Indicator Strips, they are easy to use and give quick results to help determine the percentage level of Free Fatty Acids in your biodiesel feedstock.
One box contains 40 indicator strips (>2% to >7% level)

The seeds are large like nuts and hold viability well. Trees mature in roughly 4-5 years, reaching up to about 15 feet in height, and will continue to grow and produce seed for about 50 years. Further, they are helpful in preventing erosion.
Growing information: Although soil fertility is not a requirement, good soil will produce more oil. Manure is a good source of fertilization, but it should be added after germination. Top soil or potting soil should both work for germination. Seeds will benefit from scarification prior to planting. Sow about 1" deep. Jatropha likes heat but can withstand light frost. Full sun is recommended.
