Principle: A centrifuge sets an object in high speed rotational movement. When the object is rotated around a fixed axis, the object is subjected to centrifugal force that is perpendicular to the instantaneous center of curvature. An equal and opposite force, called centripetal force, is directed inward toward the axis. It causes objects drawn towards the center. The forces cause objects of differing densities to separate.

Applications: This principle has important applications where oil is centrifuged for filtration and water removal. Centrifuges are used for separating fluids of differing densities, such as oil - water separation, and WVO cleaning by:

• Removal of sediments & water from waste vegetable oil

• Separation of water/glycerin from biodiesel
